What is an RCCB and Why is it Needed in a Distribution board

While electricity and its various applications have become critical elements of the homes we live in, the fact is, it presents distinct and unique forms of threats to our lives along with building infrastructures. Electrocution and fire are some of the many eminent risks associated with electricity, and we cannot afford to be careless when it comes to protecting equipment in residential spaces.

A Residual Current Circuit Breaker (RCCB) can be elaborated on as one of the many protective measures that can be employed for protection at home in your distribution board. It is an extremely crucial measure when it comes to the preservation of power distribution to different devices/appliances. It can be further explained as a current sensing device, which can automatically predict when to disconnect the circuit in the case of a fault occurring in the connected circuit or, if the current goes way past the rated sensitivity.

A primary aim of an RCCB is safeguarding an individual from the harm caused by electric shocks or even in more severe cases, electrocution and fires. RCCB’s are proving to be very helpful in the situation of a sudden earth fault. The functionality of an RCCB ensures that in these cases, the circuit will trip rather immediately and the person is therefore safe from an electric shock. It goes without saying that an RCCB’s performance helps in safeguarding the different equipment in the power management system as well.

An RCCB functions on the principle of Kirchhoff’s law, which says that the incoming current outgoing current in a circuit must be the same. RCCB thus estimates the difference in the current values between live and neutral wires (if there is any). In the perfect scenario, the current flowing to the circuit with the live wire should be the same as the current flowing through the neutral wire. In case of any default, the current from the neutral wire is reduced, and the difference between the two known as Residual Current. On estimating this Residual Current, the RCCB then decides to trip the circuit.

Advantages of an RCCB -

  • Offers safety against two situations - an earth fault as well as a leakage current.
  • Automatically disconnects the circuit when the rated sensitivity is exceeded
  • Offers the opportunity of dual termination both for cable and busbar connections
  • Offers protection against voltage fluctuation since it includes a filtering device that protects against transient voltage levels.

#Schneider Electric is a popular brand in the domains of electrical protection for both residential and industrial purposes. The brand has established its status as a leatop ding provider in the fields of RCCB’s, along with other similar protective devices, and even electric switches & modular switches for home. Along with electrical protection, the brand has also successfully established itself in smart technology, power management, and home automation as well
